"Let Freedom Ring" : A 50 Year Anniversary

    Last updated 7 months ago

Fifty Years ago today, Martin Luther King, Jr. implored his audience to "let freedom ring" from the hilltops and mountains of every state in the nation, some of which he cited by name in his speech.

"When we allow freedom to ring — when we let it ring from every city and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last, free at last, great God almighty, we are free at last," King said in closing.

Today at 3p est/2p cst, bells will answer his call from each of the specific states King named, as well as at other sites around the nation and the world.

At the Lincoln Memorial, President Barack Obama and former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter will join members of the King family and Georgia Rep. John Lewis, who also spoke at the 1963 March on Washington, in ringing a bell that hung in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., before the church was bombed in 1963, organizers said.

The Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, said the anniversary is a reminder "of what a powerful moment that march was in American history and how it really calls us to try to keep faith with the work that was begun 50 years ago."

3 Essential Oils to Change Your Life…and shave

    Last updated 8 months ago

The Boardroom barbers constantly express the importance and need for clients to adopt a pre-shave segment to their shaving routine.

Preparation of the beard is most important in order to achieve a close and comfortable shave. As suggested by our master-barbers, a pre-shave oil applied to the beard should be the firs-step to shaving.

The natural properties and botanical ingredients in these essential oils are essential in softening the beard and protect the skin. The lubrication properties of the oil allow the razor to glide gently over the skin, shaving the hair while minimizing the occurrence of irritation. Pre-shave oil is ideal for men with sensitive skin, razor burns, tough beards and ingrown hairs.

We recommend three of the most popular types of pre-shave oil. The following breaks down each, their benefits and recommended skin types.

    • Lemon: The essential oil extracted from lemon is geared toward men with normal to oily skin. Lemon has anti-bacterial, astringent, anticoagulant and antiseptic properties. It cleanses the skin and helps rejuvenate the skin cells. In addition to being a soothing agent, lemon oil reduces the production of sebum, tightens pores and is high in Vitamin C, which helps boost skin tone.
    • Lavender: This lavender oil is geared toward men with sensitive to normal skin. Lavender oil possesses antibacterial properties as well as anti-inflammatory and antiseptic ones. In addition to being a pain-relieving agent, lavender oil helps in healing wounds, soothing skin irritations and replenishing skin cells. Lavender carries a warm, floral scent.
    • Sandalwood: This oil works best with men who have normal to dry skin types. Sandalwood is a known natural antiseptic that soothes, moisturizes and rejuvenates the skin. With antibacterial and healing properties, sandalwood is a natural skin conditioner. It is also notorious for being an aphrodisiac. The aroma is warm, woody and slightly earthy a hint of eucalyptus.

Not Just a Shave: A Brief History of Aromatherapy

    Last updated 8 months ago

Certain grooming habits such as exfoliating, conditioning your hair and pedicures are largely associated with women only. For most men, aromatherapy is among this list.

    But should it be?

Aromatherapy is the practice of infusing essential oils extracted from flowers, leaves, roots, woods, herbs, resin, spices and fruits to treat ailments and restore a sense of well being. Aromatherapy is quite possibly one of the most prevalent parts of a man’s routine. Actually, one of the most manly and important parts of his routine that has been hiding under his nose the entire time – shaving.

Although the term aromatherapy was originally coined in the early 20th century by René-Maurice Gattefosse, the practice of using essential oils is at least 6,000 years old, being used and practiced by Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Arabs, Chinese and American Indians just to name a few. Essential oils have been applied for their anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties, integrated into relaxation techniques and esteemed for their therapeutic and aromatic characteristics.

The actual study of essential oils began completely by accident. Gattefosse immersed his hand into lavender oils after being burned in his lab. The lavender reduced the swelling and accelerated the healing - with no scaring. He later published a book on the anti-bacterial properties of certain oils, the results of which are recognized worldwide.

Despite common belief, essential oils are not oily and will evaporate almost immediately once in contact with skin and, as mentioned before, are one of the most favored beginnings to a man’s shave.

Pre-shave oil is, in-fact, aromatherapy. It not only lifts the senses, but is also the first step in preparation of the beard. The natural properties and botanical ingredients are essential in softening the beard, resulting in a very comfortable and close shave.
